30 Things in 30 Year: Be Ready So You Don’t Have to Get Ready

On Saturday, I was invited to a fashion launch party for I’m Taboo, a new women’s line that delivers a fun, fresh style paying homage to and inspired by Dorothy Dandridge. While admiring the detail of two particular pieces, I had to personally tell the creator, designer and author, Kimberly Jackson. “You should try these on,” she suggested. I didn’t know what to say or what to think, all I could do was try them on. She saw me across the room and immediately told me I was in the show. I was whisked off to the back for further prepping. Next thing you know I was on the runway along with a great reception from the crowd, my fellow models, and the designer herself.

It would have been easy for Kimberly to doubt her gifts, doubt her purpose, just as it would have been easy for me to complain or gripe about not having being sized or wrong shoes or “I’m not ready.” We’re all aspiring to things, but a part of the aspiration is the preparation. Kimberly wasn’t quite sure if she was ready to launch her menswear so soon, but the Universe decided for her. And for me too. That night, I became the face for her I’m Taboo men’s Line—coming soon.

Don't doubt yourself. Be ready so you don’t have to get ready!
