In Los Angeles, amidst the MTV Video Music Award pre-parties and the album release celebration of Chris Brown, things turned less festive when Marion “Suge” Knight, 49, of Death Row Records fame was shot, along with a man, 32, and a woman, 19.
On August 24, the nightspot, 1Oak, was filled with hundreds of clubgoers when the shots rang out around 1:40 am Sunday. According to one officer, Mr. Knight was shot in the upper torso. TMZ and other websites reported that Mr. Knight was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, where he was said to be recovering from surgery in intensive care.
Knight had a similar encounter in 2005 when he was shot in the leg at one of that year’s pre-VMA parties hosted by hip-hop artist Kanye West in Miami.
And in 1996, rapper Tupac Shakur was shot and killed in Las Vegas while riding in Knight’s car.
Mr. Knight founded Death Row Records in 1991 with Dr. Dre, and the label went on to discover some of the biggest rappers of that decade such as Snoop Dogg and MC Hammer.
