I’m sitting at work and a random playlist of songs sound off throughout the office when Whitney Houston’s “It’s Not Right, but it’s Okay” comes on. Now, most people who know me know I am a big Whitney Houston fan—like, big, but this classic lyric and title inspired me a bit more than usual. Sometimes it is really important just to say, “It’s not right, but it’s okay.”
By acknowledging that sometimes you may have been given the short end of the stick or the bum end of the deal, shows growth. Too many of us tell ourselves and commit to lies and more often than not we ourselves are the only ones we’re fooling. There is power in acceptance. Sometimes we just have to stand up and say, “It happened,” or “You did that,” or “This is a lesson learned.” This admission and acceptance is not a sign of weakness, but of strength. It takes a very strong individual to embrace and say, “Yes, I may have been wronged. Yes, this situation may be less than the best, but I will not let it consume, hinder, or deter me.”
Most times, it is at these times of acknowledgment that we can prepare ourselves to move on. Think about it, you can’t have what’s truly yours as long as you are holding on the bits and pieces of what was. You cannot truly cherish and appreciate wellness and happiness if you’ve never been sick and tired.
So, going forward, during all those “sick and tired” moments, breathe and say “it’s not right, but it’s okay” and let it be a reminder that you are not weak, but strong and moving on.
